Rock and Shoals Natural Area is a hidden gem in Athens. It is a large granite outcrop boasting of beautiful mosses, lichens, resurrection ferns, and breath taking cedars. However, Rock and Shoals is an ecological sensitive place. A lot of human intrusion is not ideal as it could do more harm than good. There are rare species of flowers that can only be found in a handful of places. Rock and Shoals is one of those delicate places and it is hiding in our own backyards.
Wild Intelligence is partnering with the Athens/Clarke Parks Services and Department of Natural Resources on February 12, 2017 from 9 am – 12 pm to clean up Rock and Shoals. There is unfortunately a fair amount of garbage that has been there for many seasons and the time has come to get it out of there! We hope to continue towards the goal of good land stewardship of this natural resource hiding in our own back yards!
We will gather in the Kroger parking lot off College Station Rd and carpool to the outcrop. Please arrive at 8:45. (There isn’t a lot of parking at Rock and Shoals. Please arrive at 8:45.)
