The natural world is full of color and chances to experiment. Art has been a great big part of my life since I was a little girl, constantly drawing, painting, and finding my style.

Through my personal journey with nature connection that same artist in me who made many pieces of art with plastic paint and plastic brushes was pulled into testing the limits of making art supplies and materials with my own hands and the many plants, fibres, and minerals  found outside in nature. I have since smashed poke berries into a liquidy watercolor wash, topped hand carved paintbrush handles with hair from my own head, and found a rainbow of colored pigments in creek rocks or as I like to call them, “paint rocks.” By no means were all of my experiments perfect, but I’ve found that to be part of the beauty of crafting something with my own hands. I am almost always pleasantly surprised with the turnout.

In this class we will go out on the land to harvest materials to make wood handled paintbrushes, pigment, and drawing charcoal. We will also begin learning the skills we need to make these things (ex: fire building, carving.) We will make a community fire and craft beside it. Our fire will be big and warm, but please be sure to dress appropriately for the weather. Layers, layers, layers! This class will involve some walking – sturdy shoes are a must.

There are a few methods of making these items, and we will start out at the basic level of each of them. I am happy to answer any questions you have about furthering your use with wildcrafted artists tools. I may not have all of the answers, but I will join you in conversation at the very least!

If you have a favorite knife or folding saw, please bring these to class. I will provide knives and saws for those that do not have their own.

If you have any questions about the class please contact Soleil Ouimet at soleil@wildintelligence.org or 757-777-4861 from 9am-5pm Mon-Fri.
